Vietnam visa for Indians (Vietnam visa kaise milta hai): the e-visa in five steps
Indian passport holders need a visa, and the e-visa is the simple route. Since a government resolution in August 2023, Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of all countries, valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry.
- Apply only on the official government portal (evisa.gov.vn). Many look-alike sites charge extra service fees.
- Upload a passport photo page scan and a recent portrait photo.
- Choose single entry (USD 25) or multiple entry (USD 50). The fee is non-refundable, so double check your passport number and dates.
- Pick the airport you will land at; Hanoi (Noi Bai), Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat) are all on the e-visa list.
- Download and print the approved e-visa, and keep a copy on your phone.
Apply well ahead of your flight. Processing usually takes a few working days, and you do not want to be refreshing the portal the night before departure.
Direct flights from India to Vietnam
Non-stop flights make Vietnam feel close. Reported routes for the 2026 to 2027 season include:
- IndiGo: Delhi and Kolkata to Hanoi, and a daily Mumbai to Hanoi service from late October 2026
- Akasa Air: Mumbai to Hanoi
- Vietnam Airlines: Ahmedabad to Hanoi from November 2026
- Air India: Delhi to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
Flight times are around four to six hours depending on the city. Fares swing a lot with season and festivals (Diwali and the December holidays are peak), so set a fare alert early. For this plan, an open-jaw ticket (fly into Hanoi, out of Da Nang) saves you a day of backtracking.
7-day Vietnam itinerary from India
A relaxed first trip: three bases, one domestic flight, no overnight buses.
Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi
Land at Noi Bai, buy a local SIM at the airport and head to the Old Quarter. Spend the evening around Hoan Kiem Lake, where the weekend walking streets fill with families and street performers.
Day 2: Hanoi’s history and food
Start at the Temple of Literature (VND 70,000), Vietnam’s first university, then walk to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum area (check its opening days before you go). Afternoon: coffee culture. Try egg coffee, and a coconut coffee if you want something cold.
Day 3: Ha Long Bay
Take a shuttle to Ha Long and board an overnight cruise. This is the trip’s biggest variable cost, so compare what is included: kayaking, cave visits and meals differ a lot between boats.
Day 4: Back to Hanoi, fly to Da Nang
Cruises usually return around midday. Head to Noi Bai for an evening flight to Da Nang (about 1 hour 20 minutes), then sleep in Hoi An, around 45 minutes by car.
Day 5: Hoi An Ancient Town
Buy the VND 120,000 Ancient Town ticket, which covers the town and entry to several heritage sites including a choice of the Japanese Covered Bridge or Quan Cong Temple. Stay for the evening when the lanterns come on along the river.
Day 6: Countryside or beach
Rent a bicycle to the vegetable village and rice fields around Hoi An, or spend a lazy day at An Bang beach. If you want a tailor-made suit or dress, order it on Day 5 so there is time for a fitting.
Day 7: Da Nang and fly home
Visit the Marble Mountains on the way to Da Nang airport. Connecting through Hanoi or a Southeast Asian hub is usually needed for the flight home.
Vegetarian food in Vietnam
Vietnam has a long Buddhist vegetarian tradition, which makes things easier than you might fear. Look for “chay” (vegetarian) on signs and menus, for example “com chay” (vegetarian rice dishes). Fish sauce is the hidden ingredient to watch: ask for “khong nuoc mam” (no fish sauce) if you avoid it. Jain travellers should carry a printed card in Vietnamese explaining no onion, garlic or root vegetables.
Money-saving tips for Indian travellers
- Withdraw dong locally rather than exchanging rupees in India; the rupee is not widely exchanged in Vietnam, so carry some US dollars as a backup.
- Travel in shoulder season: October to November and March to April give good weather in Hanoi without the December peak.
- Use ride-hailing apps in cities for fixed, upfront prices.
- Book the cruise last, after flights and hotels, and compare inclusions rather than headline prices.
