Is Thailand visa free for Indians? (Thailand visa free hai kya?) Yes, for 30 days
Thailand’s Cabinet approved a 30-day visa exemption for Indian passport holders travelling for tourism on 14 July 2026. The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi explained that it would start 15 days after the Ministry of Interior’s announcement in the Royal Gazette, and news reports confirm it took effect on 15 September 2026.
Three things to keep in mind:
- It is for tourism. If you have a job offer in Thailand, or plan to study, this is not your route.
- 30 days per entry. A one or two week holiday fits easily; a long backpacking trip does not.
- Already there under the old rule? The embassy says people who entered before the change can stay until the end of the period they were given at arrival.
Documents to carry at Thai immigration
Visa free does not mean document free. Reports of the new rule list what officers may ask Indian travellers to show:
- Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive
- Confirmed return or onward ticket
- Hotel bookings for your stay
- A simple travel plan
- Funds of at least THB 20,000 per person (about INR 56,000), in cash or an equivalent you can show
Travelling as a family or group? Each person should carry their own documents, so print one set per passport.
TDAC: the Thailand Digital Arrival Card
Thailand has replaced the old paper arrival form with an online one. Fill in the TDAC within 72 hours before you land on the official Immigration Bureau website, tdac.immigration.go.th. It is free: if a site asks you to pay for the TDAC, close it.
Thailand visa for Indians for longer stays: the e-visa
If 30 days is not enough, apply for a visa before you travel through Thailand’s official e-visa website, thaievisa.go.th, run by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Choose the category that matches your purpose, and apply early enough for processing.
What about visa on arrival?
Searches for “Thailand visa on arrival for Indians” are still common, but with 30 days visa free for tourism, most Indian holidaymakers no longer need it. If your plans do not fit the exemption, the e-visa route above is the safe option.
A quick 4-day Bangkok plan
Thirty days is plenty for a classic first trip. A happy short version:
- Day 1: Arrive, check in near a BTS Skytrain or MRT station, evening at a night market.
- Day 2: The old city: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho with its reclining Buddha, then a river ferry across to Wat Arun at sunset. Dress modestly for temples (shoulders and knees covered).
- Day 3: Shopping and food: Chatuchak Weekend Market if it is a weekend, otherwise Siam and Pratunam.
- Day 4: A day trip to Ayutthaya’s temple ruins by train or tour, then fly home.
Vegetarian travellers are well looked after in Bangkok: look for the yellow flags with red lettering (“jay”), which mark vegan Chinese-Thai food, and there are many Indian restaurants around Sukhumvit and Pahurat, Bangkok’s Little India.
Quick checklist before you fly
- Passport valid for 6+ months
- Return ticket and hotel bookings printed
- THB 20,000 per person, or proof you can access it
- TDAC submitted within 72 hours of arrival
- Travel insurance (strongly recommended, even if not checked)
