Georgia is one of the happiest surprises for Indian travellers: snowy Caucasus peaks, cosy wine towns and a capital full of balconies and street art, a few hours’ flight from the Gulf hubs. Even better, many Indians do not need a separate Georgian visa at all. Here is exactly who qualifies, what to do if you do not, and a 6-day plan to enjoy it.

Georgia visa-free entry for Indians with a US, UK or Schengen visa

Georgia’s Government Ordinance No. 256 lists the countries whose visa or residence permit lets you enter Georgia without a Georgian visa. If you hold a valid visa or residence permit of one of them, you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The list in the ordinance includes, among others:

GroupCountries on the list
North AmericaUnited States, Canada
EuropeUnited Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and the EU states, for example Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Greece
Asia and PacificJapan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Israel
GulfUnited Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman

Two conditions matter at the border:

  • Valid on the day of entry. The visa or residence permit must be valid on the day you cross into Georgia, and you must be able to show it.
  • Check the current list. The ordinance was last amended in April 2025. Before you book, open the consolidated version on matsne.gov.ge (linked in the sources) and confirm your visa’s country is still listed.

Good to know: the final decision at the border is always made by Georgian immigration, so carry your return ticket, hotel booking and travel insurance even when you enter visa-free.

Indian residents of the UAE and other Gulf states

Lakhs of Indians live in the Gulf, and the Gulf states are on the list too. The Embassy of Georgia in the UAE spells out the conditions for UAE visa and residence holders:

  • stay up to 90 days in any 180 days
  • the residence permit (Emirates ID) must be valid on the day you enter and leave Georgia
  • your passport needs at least 90 days of validity

Some nationalities face an extra rule (a multiple-entry UAE visa valid for at least a year); India is not among them on the embassy’s list.

Georgia visa for Indians without a qualifying visa: the e-visa route

No US, UK, Schengen or Gulf visa? You apply in advance. The Georgian embassy lists the C1 tourist visa tariff as USD 20 (about INR 1,900), valid for stays of up to 90 days. The official e-visa portal also shows an extra USD 15 per applicant for an online identity verification step.

Documents the official portal asks for:

  1. a recent photo and a scan of your passport
  2. proof of accommodation (hotel booking)
  3. a return flight ticket
  4. travel or health insurance covering your whole stay
  5. proof of funds, such as a bank statement
  6. proof of the purpose of your trip

Apply only through the government portals linked below this guide. Agents may offer to “help”, but the official fee is small.

Getting to Georgia from India

Most Indian travellers connect through a Gulf or Turkish hub (Dubai, Sharjah, Doha or Istanbul are common choices) into Tbilisi or Kutaisi. Kutaisi is served heavily by low-cost carriers, and the drive or shuttle to Tbilisi takes about three to four hours, so compare the total journey, not just the fare.

6-day Georgia itinerary for Indian travellers

Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi

Settle into the Old Town. Walk the lanes below Narikala Fortress and the sulphur bath district of Abanotubani, then take the cable car up for sunset over the city.

Day 2: Tbilisi highlights

Cross the glass Bridge of Peace, wander Rustaveli Avenue and the Dry Bridge flea market, and end with dinner in the old town. Georgian food is very friendly to vegetarians: try khachapuri (cheese bread), lobio (bean stew), badrijani (aubergine rolls with walnut paste) and pkhali (vegetable and walnut dips).

Day 3: Mtskheta and the road to Kazbegi

Drive north along the Georgian Military Road. Stop at Jvari Monastery and the old capital Mtskheta, then the Ananuri fortress above its reservoir, before reaching Stepantsminda (Kazbegi).

Day 4: Gergeti Trinity Church

Hike or take a 4x4 up to Gergeti Trinity Church for the famous view of Mount Kazbek. Return to Tbilisi in the afternoon. In winter, swap the hike for a day of snow fun in Gudauri on the same road.

Day 5: Sighnaghi and the wine country

Head east to Sighnaghi, the hilltop “city of love” with views over the Alazani valley, and visit the Bodbe Monastery nearby.

Day 6: Last shopping and fly home

Pick up churchkhela (walnut and grape sweets) and spices at the Dezerter Bazaar before your flight.

Money and practical tips

  • Currency: the Georgian lari (GEL). At October 2026 rates, 1 USD is about GEL 2.6, so INR 100 is roughly GEL 2.7.
  • Cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi; carry some cash for villages and markets.
  • Insurance is not optional paperwork here: Georgian authorities can ask for it at the border.
  • Vegetarian and Jain travellers will find plenty of bean, walnut and cheese dishes; ask for dishes without meat and check dishes cooked with eggs if that matters to you.
